Over the course of this design unit, I explored design principles through reading, observation, and creating my own digital media projects. These assignments helped me think more critically about how visual elements communicate meaning and how design choices influence audience perception. Below are links to each of the projects I completed during the unit.
Vignelli Canon Reflection
In this reflection, I discussed key ideas from The Vignelli Canon, including simplicity, structure, typography, and timeless design. I reflected on how these principles can improve the clarity and effectiveness of my future design work.
Design Blitz
For the Design Blitz assignment, I photographed examples of design concepts in everyday life, including minimalism, dominance, balance, and form/function. Analyzing these examples helped me better understand how design principles appear in objects and environments that people interact with daily.
Design Assignment #1 – De-Stress Color
For this assignment, I used digital coloring pages and experimented with color combinations that created a calming and relaxing effect. This project focused on modifying images through color and exploring how color impacts mood and emotion.
Design Assignment #2 – Warp Text Design
This project involved creating a visual poem using a photograph of myself. I manipulated text to fit within the composition and explored how typography can become part of an image rather than simply sitting on top of it.
Design Assignment #3 – Video Game Story Cover
For this assignment, I designed a video game cover based on my own story. I considered visual storytelling, character representation, and how cover art can attract attention while still leaving parts of the story a mystery.
Reflection
From the readings and videos, I learned key ideas like composition, hierarchy, and the elements and principles of design, especially through resources such as “Composition and the Elements of Visual Design” and “The Seven Components of Design,” which broke down how balance, contrast, and alignment affect clarity.
This unit taught me that design is much more intentional than I originally realized. Every element including color, typography, spacing, balance, and imagery contributes to how a message is communicated. I learned that strong design is not simply about making something look appealing; it is about making information clear, meaningful, and engaging for an audience.
One aspect that was harder than I expected was combining multiple design principles into a single project. It was easy to understand concepts like balance or dominance individually, but applying them effectively while also considering typography and composition required much more planning than I anticipated. I also found it challenging to decide which elements to remove because simplicity often requires restraint.
What was easier than expected was finding examples of design in everyday life for the Design Blitz assignment. Once I started paying attention, I noticed design principles everywhere from product packaging to restaurant cups and signs. This assignment helped me see design as something that influences people constantly, often without them realizing it.
The most frustrating part of the unit was working with design software and getting text and images positioned exactly how I wanted. Small adjustments often took much longer than expected. However, that frustration also taught me the importance of patience and attention to detail in the design process.
What I enjoyed most was the creative freedom of the design assignments. I especially enjoyed creating the visual poem because it allowed me to combine photography, typography, and personal expression into one project. Overall, this unit helped me develop a greater appreciation for design and gave me practical skills that I can apply to future digital media and communication projects.
Overall, this design unit helped me develop a stronger understanding of how visual communication works. Through reading about design principles, analyzing real-world examples, and creating my own projects, I learned that effective design requires both creativity and purpose. Each assignment challenged me to think critically about how color, typography, composition, and imagery influence the way audiences interpret a message. While some projects required patience and problem-solving, they also allowed me to experiment with new techniques and express my creativity. By the end of the unit, I gained a greater appreciation for thoughtful design and the role it plays in storytelling, communication, and everyday life.
